Boo! & So Sorry Mamma Bear

October 30, 2008

And on another note, this story from the AP brought a tear to my eye today. . .

WOODFIN, North Carolina —  Police had to halt traffic on a highway in North Carolina to help a mother bear get to her cub after it was struck and killed by a vehicle.

Police say the cub was struck Tuesday afternoon and the driver didn’t stop.

Officers in the western North Carolina town of Woodfin halted cars for about 20 minutes after the mother bear had failed twice at trying to get her 80-pound cub off the busy highway.

Sgt. Dawn Roberts says officers stood with rifles while others pulled the cub to the side of the road near the mother. She says the mother bear grabbed the cub by the scruff of the neck and ran off into the woods to tend to its body.

Have fun and be safe everyone!

Graffiti Angel

October 27, 2008

I spotted another graffiti angel that occasionally peppers Midtown Kansas City this weekend.  (I wrote about these Angels back in September 2007)  I ran across this one on a trash dumpster behind the SunFresh Grocery Store.  Not that I condone graffiti, but I love these little guys.

No on Prop 8

October 24, 2008

Apple is publicly opposing Proposition 8 and making a donation of $100,000 to the No on 8 campaign. Apple was among the first California companies to offer equal rights and benefits to our employees’ same-sex partners, and we strongly believe that a person’s fundamental rights — including the right to marry — should not be affected by their sexual orientation. Apple views this as a civil rights issue, rather than just a political issue, and is therefore speaking out publicly against Proposition 8.

David Byrne at the Uptown Theater

October 20, 2008

5 weeks ago I wrote the following after seeing Laurie Anderson’s dreadfull performance of Homeland. . . “I’m glad I have the David Byrne concert to look forward to next month.  I’ve seen David three times and he always puts on an interesting show.  I’m sure that will help me get this bad taste outta my mouth.”

Boy, was I right.  Last nights concert was light hearted and just plain fun.  This time around David’s show revolved around his prior and present work with Brian Eno.   IMO, David performed some of his best songs last night including I Zimbra, Crosseyed and Painless, Strange Overtones and the highlight of the night, Houses in Motion.  It was obvious that the performers and David were having a good time and that definitely crossed over to the audience.

The only thing that irritated me was when David came out before the concert started and stated that he would be playing songs that he crafted with “other musicians.”  Other musicians?  Come on David, give it a rest and give credit where credit is due.  The other members of The Talking Heads helped put a lot of last nights setlist on the map, it wouldn’t hurt to give them a more respectful nod of the head.

That aside, I’m so glad I was again able to see one of my generations most innovative performer and song writer.  Thanks for a great night David Byrne, I look forward to seeing you again down the road.

Sunday Boredom

October 13, 2008

Since I got dumped by my boyfriend Saturday night. . . There was no way in hell I was going to spend Sunday afternoon at home alone.

So I called my friend M and suggested we do something totally random and off the wall.  He agreed and just 1.5 hours later, at my suggestion, we ended up at the Liberty Corn Maze in Liberty, Missouri.  This just isn’t any ol’ Midwestern Corn Maze.  This is 8.9 miles of claustrophobic corn hallways hiding 24 unique checkpoints.  We were given a map as we entered the maze to help locate the checkpoints and I’m proud to say M and I were able to find (I mean stumble across) 6 of the them.  After 45 minutes we realized that it would take us at least a week to find all the checkpoints so we gave up and M did a great job of finding our way out of the maze.

There’s nothing like spending an afternoon doing totally silly and random things with good friends.  Maybe next time we can find the other 18 checkpoints.  Oi vay!

Now back to the real world. . . Night night A. . . grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
