Amtrak to California Video/Pics

July 31, 2008

So I finally sat down and put my vacation pics up on Flickr and edited together a short little video to put up on YouTube.  The video turned out better than I expected even if it is a little corny with the silly music.  To me the video on YouTube looks way to pixilated but I can’t seem to fix it.  I’ve compressed the file a hundred different ways and it still looks blurry after its uploaded.   Guess I just have to keep playing with it.  Anyway, here are the links to the pics and here’s my vacation video. . .

Amtrak to Califronia/Update

Looks like my vacation is quickly coming to a close.  Right now I’m siting in the lounge car of the Eastbound Southwest Chief just West of Lamar, Colorado.  There must be about 75 noisy boy scouts in here along with me.  They are returning from boy scout camp which is located on the route of the Chief just outside of Raton, New Mexico.  I’m trying to drown out the noise with my ipod but it’s not working so well.

M and I have been running 100 miles per hour the past 6 days, its been crazy and fun.  There’s been so much that I’ve finally gotten to see and do over the past few days.  Things that I’ve always wanted to do including;  ride the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, ride Mummy the Ride, see Santa Monica Pier, feel the Pacific Ocean on my feet, and  see the skyline of Los Angeles.  Of course the highlight was getting to finally ride the Matterhorn Bobsleds at Disneyland (and I did that 3 times!)  That is something I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid.  Yup, its been a great week.

Another thing that I’ve really enjoyed about this trip was having the opportunity (and time) to ride the Southwest Chief out to California and back.  I’ve ridden this train to Chicago more times than I can remember but have never taken it out West.  Over the years I’ve learned so much about the Western route of the Chief and I’ve seen so many pics from train websites and message boards that its been kind of unreal to see these things and places for real.  This may sound geeky and kinda dumb, but arriving at the Fullerton train station was an awesome experience.  Thank goodness for my Amtrak Guest Reward Points which made the train trips absolutely free.  I’m back down to only 10,000 points so I guess I’ll have to build that back up again.  Would love to climb back aboard the Empire Builder in the near future for a trip to Portland/Seattle. . . but discussing that is for another day

I’ve taken a ton of pics and video this week.  I plan on trying to put together a highlight video this week.  Its been so long since i’ve really seriously tried to do some good editing but I’ll see what I can whip up.  For now, I’ll just let thie pics to the talking.

Yes, I’m been terribly lazy about posting the pictures I said I would.  Work has been really busy since I’ve returned and I just haven’t sat down to do it.  However, I have been working on the video the past couple of days so I will probably just post that instead.  Working with Imovie has been challenging since like I said I haven’t really edited any video in a long time.  It’s really made me miss working at the television stuido where I could have had this turned out in less than half the time that it has taken me just to do this first 30 seconds.

More coming. . .

All Aboard the Southwest Chief!

July 5, 2008

Tonight M and I step back aboard the Southwest Chief for another excursion.  This time we are headed out west to Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and Disneyland.  We leave tonight in about two hours and will arrive in Fullerton, CA at the ass crack of dawn on Monday.  Just checked the status of our train and it is currently running 15 minutes late (in Amtrak time that’s early).  So far so good. . .

As of this moment, I’m done with work and all the BS that it involves.  It’s all about me until 7-14-08.
